The Doane Spencer Deuce

Base car: 1932 Ford Deuce

This may be the original hot rod. If you want to look at any history of the craft, you’ll find this near the beginning. Started in 1941, Doane Spencer and Jack Dorn both went to town on the then-modern machine. Dorn was the car’s original owner, he filed the grill, installed a Duvall windshield and, most importantly, a 1937 flathead V8. Not content with these modifications, Spencer bought it in ‘44 and made a whole host of new ones. These included a removing the fenders and installing a new engine, this time a 258 Mercury V8, which was destroked down to 243, pushing the car up to 126 mph in 1949.

Spencer kept working on the Deuce until he moved on to a 1957 Thunderbird. He took to selling the cars components, before the remainder was bought by Lynn Wineland in 1958 for $300. Although changes have been made since, the car now sits in the Petersen Automotive Museum, where it’s been since 1996. If you can, it’s well worth the trip to see this piece of automotive history.
