Base car: 1927 Ford Model T Roadster

Built by Frank Mack over the course of 3000 hours, this Model T roadster is a pure work of art. Mack’s work encompassed everything but the car’s interior. The car melded everything great about American automobiles together into an amazing package. Take the car’s nose piece, built from two 1941 Chevrolet fenders, or the fully custom suspension, made from a 1938 Ford axle hooked to a 1937 crossmember. Ford 4:11 gears drive the whole thing, which is powered by a 235ci Mercury flathead V8, with a improved compression ratio of 8.5:1. The driver uses a Pontiac steering box to control the beast, which was hooked to a 1927 three-spoke steering wheel, mounted in a ‘37 Ford dash.

A driver not used to hot rods may be a little disconcerted by the exposed transmission and driveshaft you’ll find in the cabin, but it adds to the hand-built charm. Finished in 1953, Mack finally parted with the car in 1997, selling it to a collector, Bruce Meyer. The car won “best hot rod” and “best in show” at the 1953 Autorama, and was awarded a Preservation Award at the 2016 Autorama.
