The 20 Best Hot Rods Of all Time
1949 Plymouth “High And Mighty”
Base car: 1949 Plymouth business coupe

When a group of Chrysler engineers get together to race, you know you’re going to be in for a treat. This group, known as the Ramchargers, took the cheap Plymouth business coupe, and made some radical changes. A classic 354ci Hemi was installed, but customized with 392 Hemi heads. To accommodate the massive engine, the car was chopped and the body moved forward. The engine had a tilt applied to put most of the weight on the rear axle, which eventually got a constant four-link system. This was done to prevent to prevent the car doing a wheelie, as it did on its first NHRA run, which also prompted its dramatic height boost. The “High and Mighty” look changed the car’s center of gravity, giving the rear wheels more grip, with the result that the crankshaft was now a whole three feet from the ground.

The car did well, setting quarter mile times of 11 seconds, and a top quarter mile speed of 117 mph. Sadly, NHRA regulations later forced the “High and Mighty” out of competition by limiting how far off the ground the crankshaft could be, in addition to a power-to-weight ratio limit which put the Ramchargers’ car doubly out of action. The rod suffered a tragic fate afterwards, most likely being scrapped, but a reproduction was built by a new organization, the Chrysler Employees Motorsports Association, following in the footsteps of their forefathers.
