Although some might not consider it truly a hot rod, if you do, the Batmobile is definitely one of the most famous examples in history. Designed by the great George Barris from a one-off concept car, the Lincoln Futura, Barris had three weeks to transform the Futura into the Batmobile. To do this, Herb Grasse, an associate designer, drew up the plans. The car was already, as the name would suggest, futuristic, but more work had to be done.

George’s team reshaped the tail fins, opened the wheel wells, made a custom exhaust from a 5 gallon tin of paint, and the custom paint job was applied. After the show, Barris kept it in between its public appearances and cameos, before it was sold by Barris for $4.2 million, in 2013. The car is now owned privately, somewhere in Virginia.
