The 1997 Corvette was the first model from the fifth generation and featured a major change from its predecessor – hydroformed box frame which is a design that provided an improved structural platform, particularly for a convertible body style.

Chevy relocated the transmission to the rear of the vehicle to create an integrated, rear-mounted transaxle setup that was linked to the new LS1 engine through a torque tub. The 5.7-liter V8 is mated to a standard 6-speed manual transmission.

An electronically-controlled 4-speed is still the automatic option. It was an engine/transmission configuration that allowed for a 50-50 weight distribution for much improved handling.

The LS1 engine initially generated 345 horsepower, subsequently boosted in 2001 to 350 hp. The 4L60-E automatic gearbox carried over from previous models, but the manual transmission was replaced by a Borg-Warner T-56 six-speed capable producing consistent zero-to-60 mph sprints in less than five seconds and completing the quarter mile run in 13.20 seconds at 109.3 miles per hour.

Interior-wise, the basic analog-style instruments returned in lieu of the liquid-crystal display. It was better looking and easier to read at a glance.

The center stack controls are nicely marked, and the locations of all other controls are logically arranged. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, power seats/locks/mirrors/and windows, a superb sound system, and a removable roof panel.
