The 1970 Chevelle came as a convertible, sport coupe, sport sedan, 4-door sedan, a couple of wagons and coupé utility body styles. With its interiors redesigned and sheet metal mods, the Chevelle looked more squared-up and tougher than the previous model.

Two SS options were available in ’70: The RPO Z15 with the new 454 cid engine and RPO Z25 with the SS 396 engine. These were offered for the the Malibu convertible, Malibu sport coupe, and El Camino pickup. 1970 also saw the debut of the 454 cid engine and was only offered with the RPO Z15 SS Equipment option. The base 454 generated 360 hp, while the optional LS6 version produced 450 hp.

Some claimed that the LS6 was under-rated and they might be right because the LS6 cranked out about 500 horsepower as delivered from the factory. Recent engine dyno tests revealed that the 1970 LS-6 engine produces more than 450 hp and 500 lb-ft. of torque in stock configuration (stock camshaft, stock compression ratio, stock intake and exhaust manifolds).
