The Gran Sport came equipped with a powerful new 455 cubic inch engine that featured a highly touted 510-lb.ft. of torque. At the time Motor Trend took the Stage 1 to a quarter mile time of 13.38 seconds at 105.50 mph and noted that the factory rating was an understatement to say the least. That was a true testament to the power and speed of the GS Stage I.

In the realm of muscle cars, Buick’s 455 is regarded as the most powerful engine in terms of torque output over the following 22 years.
The Stage 1 variant was slated to be accompanied by a standard heavy-duty, floor-shifted three-speed manual transmission. Not surprisingly, an overwhelming number of them were delivered with one of three options: the Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 automatic or wide- or close-ratio four-speed manual. Refer to the chart on page 34 for the internal ratios of each. all GS 455 Stage 1s built in 1970 were assembled at the Flint, Michigan, plant; look for the H designation in the VIN.
