Dale Earnhardt Jr Chevelle Fetches Big Bucks for Charity
Barrett-Jackson always sells a lot of cars for charity, and they always fetch big bucks. This year at Scottsdale was no exception, raising $2.2 Million for charity amid $102.5 Million in total sales.
One car in particular caught our eye, a 1970 Chevelle designed by Dale Earnhardt Jr. The car is a collaboration between Chevrolet and Jr, and started as an original 1970 frame with a brand new body from Dynacorn International.
The car was actually introduced back in 2012 at SEMA, and was built to showcase Chevy’s Connect and Cruise powertrain system. Here’s a video of the car at SEMA:
The full auction description from Barrett-Jackson:
This “brand-new” 1970 Chevelle demonstrates the first Connect and Cruise Crate Powertrain System. This is a contemporary Resto-Mod muscle car that uses a new GM Restoration Parts-licensed Dynacorn reproduction body and modern coilover suspension system. Dale Earnhardt Jr. worked with GM designers to refine and distinguish the appearance of the Chevelle.
To complement the contemporary power plant, the car is dressed in Black Diamond metallic paint and fifth-generation Camaro Track Pack 20″ racing wheels, wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar rubber. Inside, retrimmed 2012 Camaro seats are used with GM-licensed reproduction parts. Assembly of the Chevelle came together at GM’s Milford Proving Ground and started with an original ’70 Chevelle frame, but almost every other component used during the car’s construction is all-new, including the body. Approved by GM Restoration Parts, the GM-licensed reproduction body from Dynacorn International, Inc., enables builders to construct a “new” vehicle. Along with the brand-new sheet metal, the Chevelle’s trim and interior parts came from other licensed reproduction manufacturers, including National Parts Depot, Original Parts Group and Year One.
The chassis took the modern Pro-Touring route, replacing the front suspension with a coilover conversion system and upgraded rear suspension, with chassis braces, coilover shocks and springs, a stabilizer bar and swivel-link control arms, all from Detroit Speed, Inc. The coilover front suspension delivers more controlled and precise handling, while the Swivel Link control arms connect to the rear-end housing to provide articulation that enhances traction and handling characteristics. Along with greater ride and handling than the original suspension system, the revamped chassis provides a more appropriate, lowered hot-rod stance. The other chassis components include a Moser Engineering 12-bolt rear end with 3.73 gears and Baer disc brakes at all corners. The 10-spoke Camaro Track Pack wheels measure 20×10″ and the Goodyear Supercar tire size for each rim is 285/35ZR20. Automatic transmission.
The hammer fell at $200,000, 100% of which went to Nationwide Children’s Hospital Foundation. Congratulations to the buyer, Chevy, Nationwide, Jr, and most of all the Children who will benefit from that $200k!
