Check Out This Saleen-Powered ’65 Mustang

You ever come across a project which makes you cock your eyebrows to such an extent as to make your hairline look extremely surprised? That’s the situation I’m in right now. The cause is a 1965 Mustang which has been conjoined to a supercharged Saleen V8. This is the Frankenmustang which I never knew I wanted. It’s obvious when you think about it, I suppose. Saleen is an American icon, producing their own huge, impossibly brash cars which may as well be set to rev their engines to The Star-Spangled Banner. This particular restomod? Francis Scott Key would drive it.

The Mustang is far from subtle about its drivetrain secret. It’s bedecked with Saleen stickers, but aside from that (because half the fun of a restomod is leaving an unsuspecting driver in your dust), it’s beautiful. The paint, which builder AmericaRoadster is unwilling to go into specifics about publicly, looks like a matte Avalanche Grey, complements the black detailing beautifully. A new hood has been added, as has a new front bumper, among numerous other modifications. The fenders have also seen some flaring, which seems like a good, practical choice on a build like this. The interior is just as spotless, with the Mustang being given a new red leather lining with Saleen seats.
As to how it drives? The video goes into no specifics, but it looks superb. The acceleration looks to be beastly, and once the Mustang gets going, the supercharger whinnies like…well, a mustang. The only problem? Well, it’s an auto. That seems like a crazy decision when you’re dealing with such huge racing potential. This is a car that’s well worth your time, and one I’d pay to see lay down some laps at a track day, or kick out a quarter mile.
