Porsche’s Project Gold Unveiled

August 27, 2018

Porsche’s Project Gold has finally been unveiled, and while some of our guesses were accurate, others were way off. Firstly, we were correct in that it is indeed a restomod. However, it is not going to be produced in great numbers. In fact, just one will ever be produced, and it will be limited to track use. The car is a 993-generation 911 Turbo S, with everything but the bodyshell being changed. A total of 6500 new parts were forged by Porsche Classic for the car’s exclusive use. It has been given the chassis number 346, as there were 345 993 Turbo S produced.

The engine is a newly-built version of that you’d find in a 993, a 3.6 liter twin-turbo straight-six, which produces 445 horsepower. The acceleration is identical too, with 0-60 taking 3.7 seconds. The engine sends power to all four wheels, and is hooked up to a six-speed manual transmission.

The car’s looks are drop-dead gorgeous. Finished in Golden Yellow Metallic paint, the 993’s body still looks superb today, featuring pretty-yet-functional side vents and lines that have barely aged. The exterior’s paint scheme is complemented by the interior’s black and gold scheme, with subtlety being the name of the game. The gold takes the backseat, relegated to the stitching and other such touches. The black wheels have been given a gold rim too.

The project seems to be something of a reaction by Porsche to the hugely popular Singer 911 restomods. Porsche haven’t had the best relationship with the California workshop, to the point of threatening legal action. Could this just be the start of a new wave of Porsche’s very own restomods? If by some chance, you’re reading this with a couple of million dollars weighing down your wallet, you’ll have the opportunity to purchase Project Gold on October 27. Don’t expect to simply call Porsche and secure it though, it’s to be auctioned by RM Sotheby’s at the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta.
