A Japanese Classic, Redesigned

I’ve got a fondness for the Acura NSX. While not coming from a prestigious, or even particularly famous company, it was a speedy, aluminum-bodied supercar which cost just $60,000. That’s impressive, but it is, of course, a little aged now, so a restomod is in order. Of all the people whom you may imagine as being behind such a project, I’m willing to bet one of them isn’t Clarion, the stereo company. However, they have previous for this sort of thing: in 2016, a restomodded BMW 2002 produced by Clarion Builds sold at auction for $125,000.

This 1991 NSX has had a lot of work done to it, but the most obvious is the engine swap. In what could be seen as an attempt to retain authenticity, the new engine is one from a 2006 NSX. The engine in question is a 3.2 liter supercharged V6, which produces 465 horsepower. This has been paired with a six-speed manual transmission and, as a result, the car’s 0-60 time is just 4.5 seconds. That V6 crackle has been given a little bit of audio amplification too, thanks to new AEM exhaust tips. There’s also a new air intake, new brakes, and coilover suspension.

As you’d expect, Clarion has taken the opportunity to do a little self-promotion. Inside, they’ve installed their NX807 multimedia system, and there’s also a bunch of other tech, including GPS, new speakers, and a 360-degree vision camera. The price of this car? Well, back in October, it was sold at Barrett-Jackson’s Las Vegas auction for $135,000, with all the proceeds going to the American Red Cross.
