Now here’s one you don’t see every day. The builder of this outrageous 1968 Plymouth Valiant Pro Touring machine has a long history of harboring serious affection for all things Mopar, so deep in fact that it led him to an 11-year stint as the head of Mopar Performance. Jon Clark first conceived of the little Valiant—the smallest of any A-body—as “a simple, low-buck build.” The project was based on a clean, six-cylinder two-door post Valiant Clark had purchased from his friend Bill Reilly of Reilly Motorsports in White Haven, Pennsylvania. Naturally, Reilly delivered the Valiant to Clark with a complete four-link, AlterKtion K-member, front suspension and four-corner coilovers from the RMS catalog.

Meanwhile, Jon’s plans for his engine build took a sudden and dramatic turn, as he recently explained to Hot Rod Magazine: “While researching parts for my 528 build, Edelbrock released its brand-new Victor Max Wedge aluminum raised-runner cylinder heads. I fell in love with the idea of having such new technology in such an old engine platform, and that led to building the motor around an aluminum block.” Built by Ray Barton Racing Engines, the finished piece is a leap forward into the more exotic reaches of the Power Touring domain, an all-aluminum 528 CI Max Wedge delivering a streetable 700 HP, which is handled by a Tremec 6-speed and a Moser-fortified Chrysler 8¾-inch 3.91:1 third member. The 18-inch Forgeline wheels, Nitto 555 rubber and 12-inch Wilwood four-wheel disc brakes complete the underpinnings of the little A-body, which emits a serious circle-track vibe with its flat Grey paint and front and rear spoilers. Able to serve triple duty on the street, autocross circuit or drag strip, the finished machine is both a brilliant performer and a proven head-turner.
