Plymouth Barracuda Sells For Top Dollar At Mecum’s Denver Auction

Mecum held their 2018 Denver auction from June 8-9. Much cash was splashed, and many beautiful cars changed hands, with a 1970 Plymouth Barracuda convertible finding the highest price. This wonderfully done restomod sold for $181,500. That’s a high price, but if any car is worth it, this one absolutely was. The 1970-71 Barracudas are firm favorites of Chrysler fans and this example is in pristine condition and boasts a great selection of new gear.

First of all, let’s start with its appearance. It looks stunning. Finished in a fresh coat of Plum Crazy, and featuring its original spoiler and a power top, it is crisp, clean and utterly striking. Up front, the hood features a shaker scoop. Underneath, various structural components have been reinforced and a steel Targa roll bar has been mounted to the frame for added integrity. Inside, there’s a gorgeous white interior that goes wonderfully with the exterior’s purple. You’ll also notice the pistol shifter, which hooks up to a 727 automatic transmission. It’s what the transmission is hooked up to that’s the Barracuda’s centerpiece.

The engine is a 528 aluminum Gen II Indy Hemi V8, producing 650 horsepower, which lets this Barracuda reach brilliant speeds. Additional upgrades include coilover shocks, AlterKtion front suspension, a Dana 60 rear axle, and power rack and pinion steering. The owner estimates that the restorations cost $225,000, with the work taking around four years. The car is a beauty, and it’s easy to see why it’s won multiple awards.
