We Now Have A ’69 GMC Vortec Powered Shop Truck
WE HAVE A SHOP TRUCK!
Our garage always felt like it was missing something. Yeah, there’s already badass sweepstakes cars in it, but we want something more permanent, something that we restore and modify ourselves and keep for a long time. Then, one night, Chris woke up from a vivid dream. He had an epiphany, and jumped out of bed in his RestoMods onesie and called everyone. It was 2AM.
“Let’s get a shop truck!” Chris said.
We were all in agreement and it was settled: let’s go find us a shop truck! But there were important questions to consider: where do we get one, how do we get one, how much work does it need and how much work do we want to put into it? So we got together in the office and started searching. Eventually, we found the one we wanted on Bring A Trailer. We bid on it and we won the auction! Here’s a link to the truck we chose. It’s a 1969 GMC C1500 step side, and it’s packing a solid build sheet:
- 2006 Vortec 6.0L V8 engine from a GMC Yukon
- 4L60E 4 Speed Automatic Transmission
- Flowmaster Exhaust
- Power front disc brakes
- Lowered suspension
- Dakota Digital Gauges
- Relocated gas tank under the bed
- Custom oak bed with fuel filler cutout
- RetroSound Laguna Radio; 6 Pioneer speakers and a Rockford Fosgate amplifier
- 15″ steel wheels wrapped in 255/60 Cooper Cobra Radial tires
- Fully Dynamatted cabin
- Reupholstered seats and fabrics
- Forever Sharp Steering Wheel
- Chrome rear end cover
The seller included full service records and a lot more information on the truck’s improvements. There is still work to be done on this truck and that is our plan.
We know it has a stock rear end, so it’s sadly only doing one wheel burnouts. We’re considering several options for a stronger and more capable rear end. (Gotta have positraction!) Let us know in the comments below what we should choose! We also want to add more power, and we have plans to slap a supercharger on that Vortec engine. What supercharger set up should we go with? Tell us in the comments! The truck creaks a bit on it’s suspension, so the seller included new springs. But should we just completely overhaul the suspension with all new components? Hit the comments below! Also, should we just sand down the paint and go for a patina look? Should we repaint it entirely? Or just clear coat it and leave it as is? Mike thinks we should put a shallow mount subwoofer behind the bench seat. Should we add more bass to the 6 speaker sound system? We want to know from you guys and gals what we should do to this truck, because we’re gonna make it the official RestoMods Shop Truck and it’s gonna be the baddest shop truck ever built!
Check out the video of our truck search, and the following video of the truck arriving in San Diego with our initial reaction!
