Sleeper Sunday: 70s Chevelle Wagon Smokes Nissan GTR

Welcome to the first ever edition of Sleeper Sunday. This is the part of the week where I scour the web to find the best sleeper races I can find for your enjoyment. This time around, we get to see a pretty slick, early ’70s, grocery getting Chevelle wagon smoke just about every car it went up against, to include a late model Nissan GTR.

If you weren’t sure, those GTRs are fast from the factory, and don’t require much work to get down into the 10 second quarter mile time. Love ’em or hate ’em, you can’t argue with the numbers they put up.

But, then again, that is exactly what makes this next video so satisfying…

Before we get to the video, however, let’s take a moment to discuss what a sleeper is, for those of you who’ve been living under a rock for the past, well, forever…

A sleeper is a car that is meant to look slow, or, on the very minimum, it isn’t meant to look fast. They aren’t flashy and you can’t really tell how fast one is, just by looking at it or by listening to it run. In fact, most times, they are downright hideous and laughable. That is exactly what’s great about sleeper cars.

Plus, you can have them in just about any fashion, make, or model you can think of. In fact, I’ve had the pleasure of having the doors of my old Z/28 blown off by a Pinto sleeper unable to keep its front wheels on the ground—and I can tell you there’s a bit of embarrassment that goes along with it, especially when you consider the amount of work I had done to that Camaro.

The Chevelle in the below video is the quintessential restomod. Everything has been done on the inside, with minimal upgrades on the outside. It doesn’t look like anything special, and is painted “puke green,” or whatever the exact paint scheme is called. There is likely some sort of power adder, though it isn’t sticking through the hood. There’s no way of knowing for sure, until you take a peek or if your ears are keen enough to hear a whistle or whine. A lot of them use turbochargers because they can be quieter at low engine speeds, but still spool up quickly to give the boost needed, when it is needed.

Obviously, they don’t just rely on motor. The entire car has to work together flawlessly in order to achieve what a sleeper is.

Anyway, that’s what a sleeper is, now check out the video below:

Did you enjoy watching the sleeper Chevelle wagon destroy the GTR? Let us know what you think about it. Also let me know if you enjoyed this type of article, so I know whether I need to put more up, or shove the next one where the sun don’t shine. Either way, let me know in the comments.
