Chevrolet Nova

From one classic Chevy to another, let’s take a look at the Chevrolet Nova. The Nova was produced from ’61-’79, but it’s the third generation that I’m most interested in, made from ’67-’74. This was the generation which saw the spectacularly handsome coupe introduced, making it a genuine challenger to the, well, Challenger and Mustang. The X-body frame was used, and the frontend (one of the few unique parts on X-Body cars,) stayed the same from ’68-’79, so even these parts are pretty easy to find.

The engines in Novas ranged from dinky four-cylinders through to small-block V8s and beefy big blocks, boasting 402ci of power. Their ease of modification, thanks to the range of engine sizes you can fit, as well as parts availability, is a massive part of their appeal to me. Another is their cheap price – you can pick one up these days for around $5000, and you won’t have to look hard to find one. While they may not be as celebrated as their Dodge and Ford counterparts, don’t overlook the Nova. It’s small, but by God can it be mighty.
