From one fun compact to another, let’s get the bad points out of the way first. Yep, the Vega had some big problems at the time, with its name becoming a byword for unreliability. Yes, it genuinely almost destroyed GM. So why is it here? Firstly, recalls fixed the worst issues going, and second, they came with a bunch of standard equipment not even considered on cars of the time. Front disc brakes and an aluminium cylinder block top the bill. It doesn’t have a V8 in stock form, that much is true, instead, you’ll find an inline 4-cylinder engine, but this can easily be remedied by fitting a small block V8, like the Chevy or even a Ford 302, if you wanted to cross party lines, singing Ebony and Ivory while driving your Chevy-Ford hybrid.

If you do decide to throw a V8 in there, it’ll be heaven on wheels as a result of its dinky weight. Don’t overlook the often-abused Vega in your search for the perfect restomod. If you do fancy giving it a go, it’ll only cost you around $3000-$5000.
